MIA SCROOGINS-HADLEY

BIO

Hey, I hope you’re doing well! My name is Mia and I’m a Black, queer, disabled artist-teacher living on the south shore of Tiohtià:ke. I am of a Afro-Indigenous Caribbean, African American and French Canadian descent.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My multidisciplinary art practice guides me through the things I’d like to understand and teach, often exploring embodiment, disability, sexuality, race, memory and family histories through a critical lens. I’m always looking to collaborate on new projects and experiment with new media.

As a teacher, I’m guided by Paulo Freire and bell hooks ideas on liberationist pedagogy and critical consciousness. My goal, both in art and in classrooms, is to always open up socially conscious conversations and learn from the people around me.
